Indigenous People Land Acknowledgement

As members of the GrowLocal Urban Gardens Network, we gather to grow food and community on the traditional homelands of the Indigenous People. We honor and appreciate the Bodéwadmik (Potawatomi), Lenape (Delaware), Myaamia (Miami), and Shawnee People, who are the original stewards of this land.

We specifically recognize the Wea (Waayaahtanwa), a branch of the Miami tribe, whose agricultural traditions and settlements once thrived along the Wabash River Valley. We acknowledge the history of forced removals, including the Potawatomi Trail of Death, that displaced these nations from their ancestral homes.

As we cultivate these urban gardens, we commit to practicing mindful stewardship of the soil and water, honoring the agricultural legacy of the Indigenous People, and ensuring our network remains a space for healing, equity, and inclusion for all.
